Greenfish Sea Cucumber (Stichopus chloronotus) Description
The Greenfish Sea Cucumber is a highly beneficial detritivore prized for its ability to help maintain a clean and healthy substrate in marine aquariums. Recognisable by its dark green to black coloration and rows of soft protrusions along its body, this species spends its days slowly moving across the sand bed and rockwork consuming organic waste and biofilm. In the wild, Greenfish Sea Cucumbers play an important role in reef ecosystems by recycling nutrients and processing detritus. Their peaceful nature and constant cleaning activity make them an excellent addition to mature reef aquariums with established sand beds.

Detritivore – Greenfish Sea Cucumbers feed on organic detritus, bacteria, biofilm, microalgae, and microscopic organisms found within the substrate and on aquarium surfaces. As they move through the aquarium, they process sand and consume waste trapped within it, helping to maintain a cleaner and healthier environment. Mature aquariums with established sand beds provide the best long-term food source.
Avoid these pitfalls
Common mistakes to avoid
Learn from these common pitfalls when caring for marine livestock.
-
Immature systems often lack the detritus, biofilm, and microbial populations required to sustain sea cucumbers long term. -
Without access to substrate and natural feeding areas, Greenfish Sea Cucumbers may struggle to find sufficient nutrition. -
Like many sea cucumbers, they can be injured by powerheads and overflow systems if adequate safeguards are not in place.

-
Yes. Greenfish Sea Cucumbers are excellent natural cleaners that consume detritus, organic waste, bacteria, and biofilm from the substrate. Their constant feeding helps maintain cleaner sand beds and supports a healthier reef environment. -
Greenfish Sea Cucumbers feed on organic matter trapped within the substrate, including detritus, bacteria, biofilm, microalgae, and microscopic organisms. They rely heavily on mature sand beds for long-term nutrition. -
Yes. In very clean aquariums or tanks with limited substrate, food sources can become depleted over time. Mature aquariums with established sand beds provide the best chance of long-term success. -
Occasional glass climbing is normal and may occur while the cucumber searches for food or explores new areas of the aquarium. Persistent climbing can sometimes indicate insufficient food availability or changing environmental conditions. -
Yes. Greenfish Sea Cucumbers do not consume SPS corals, LPS corals, soft corals, zoanthids, or anemones and are considered fully reef safe. -
Most aquarists recommend waiting at least 6–12 months before introducing a sea cucumber to ensure the aquarium contains sufficient biological maturity and natural food sources.
