Common Mistakes to Avoid
please follow the path for success!
-
A common mistake is placing chalices in moderate-to-high flow areas thinking it will keep them clean.
This can lead to:
failure to fully extend
tissue tearing or edge lift over time
difficulty feeding properly
They prefer gentle, indirect flow, just enough to prevent detritus settling without directly impacting the flesh.
-
Chalices are frequently placed in higher light to enhance colour, but they are generally low to moderate light corals.
Too much light can cause:
bleaching or washed-out fluorescence
tissue recession starting from edges or mouths
reduced polyp extension
Sudden lighting changes (especially after shipping) are also a major stress trigger. They perform best with slow, controlled acclimation.
-
Chalice corals are often underestimated as “slow growers,” but many varieties are highly aggressive at night.
Common mistakes include:
placing them close to other LPS or SPS
ignoring their long sweeper tentacles
not allowing space for encrusting expansion
This can result in:
stinging damage to nearby corals
slow territorial expansion conflicts
long-term loss of neighbouring coral tissue
They need clear buffer zones, especially along their growth edge.
