Common Mistakes to Avoid
please follow the path for success!
-
Scolymia are often placed in mid-to-high light zones to enhance colour, but they actually prefer low to moderate lighting.
Too much light can lead to:
bleaching or fading colour
reduced inflation and “tight” tissue
long-term stress and poor feeding response
They generally thrive best on the sand bed with stable, indirect light and gradual acclimation.
-
A common mistake is putting Scolymia in areas with too much movement to “keep it clean.”
This can cause:
poor expansion and deflation
difficulty capturing food
tissue irritation over time
They perform best in gentle, indirect flow where detritus doesn’t settle heavily but the coral isn’t being blasted.
-
Scolymia respond very well to feeding, but many hobbyists either:
don’t feed them at all, or
overfeed large chunks that foul the water or sit on tissue
Both can lead to problems like:
nutrient spikes in smaller systems
tissue recession if food is left to decay
reduced long-term growth consistency
They do best with small, regular feedings of meaty foods or fine particulate coral nutrition.
