Avoid these pitfalls

Common Mistakes to Avoid

please follow the path for success!

  • Trachyphyllia are often placed in mid-light zones to “improve colour,” but they naturally prefer low light conditions.

    Too much light can cause:

    • bleaching or washed-out colour

    • tissue recession starting from the edges

    • constant contraction and poor inflation

They perform best on the sand bed in shaded or low-intensity light areas, with slow acclimation if moved.

  • A common mistake is placing Trachy in areas with moderate to high flow to keep detritus off it.

    This leads to:

    • failure to fully expand

    • tissue irritation over time

    • difficulty capturing food

They need very gentle, indirect flow, just enough to prevent debris settling without disturbing the flesh.

  • Because Trachyphyllia are sand-bed corals, they are often placed without considering stability.

    Mistakes include:

    • placing them where sand shifts and buries tissue

    • positioning near sharp rock edges

    • allowing detritus buildup around the base

    This can cause:

    • tissue damage and infection risk

    • slow recession at the base

    • long-term decline even in good water quality

A clean, stable, low-flow sand bed area is ideal for long-term health.
