Common Mistakes to Avoid

please follow the path for success!

  • Torch coral is one of the most aggressive Euphyllia species, but it’s often grouped tightly with hammer, frogspawn, and other LPS.

    This leads to:

    • long sweeper tentacle battles at night

    • tissue damage between colonies

    • slow recession where corals touch

Even different torch colonies can be incompatible, so spacing is critical.

  • A common mistake is placing torch coral in either:

    • too much direct flow, or

    • too little movement

    High flow causes:

    • polyps to stretch, retract, or tear

    • poor extension and feeding response

    Low stagnant flow leads to:

    • detritus buildup between heads

    • increased risk of tissue irritation

They do best in moderate, random flow where tentacles gently sway without being whipped around.

  • Torch coral is often bought as a small frag, but many hobbyists don’t plan for its long-term behaviour.

    Over time it can:

    • develop long sweeper tentacles at night

    • take up significant space as it branches

    • outcompete nearby LPS if placement is tight

Without proper spacing, it can slowly dominate sections of the reef.
