About the Powder Brown Tang (Acanthurus japonicus)

The Powder Brown Tang is an elegant and distinctive surgeonfish featuring a powder-brown body with a white throat and face, bright yellow dorsal and anal fins, and a white tail with orange accents. This beautiful species brings subtle sophistication to reef aquariums with its unique coloration and graceful swimming behavior. Native to the Indo-Pacific, Powder Brown Tangs are prized for their peaceful temperament and excellent algae-grazing abilities.

Care Requirements

  • Tank Size: Minimum 300 litres (75 gallons), preferably 450+ litres for adults
  • Diet: Primarily herbivorous - requires marine algae, nori sheets, spirulina, and herbivore pellets. Supplement with occasional meaty foods
  • Water Parameters: Temperature 24-27°C, pH 8.1-8.4, salinity 1.023-1.025
  • Swimming Space: Active swimmer requiring open areas and rockwork for grazing
  • Experience Level: Intermediate - requires stable water quality and proper acclimation

Tank Compatibility

Generally peaceful and reef-safe, though can be territorial toward other Acanthurus tangs, especially conspecifics. Best kept as the only Powder Brown unless tank is very large. Compatible with most peaceful to semi-aggressive species including clownfish, angelfish, wrasses, and other tang genera (Zebrasoma, Naso). May show aggression toward similar-looking brown tangs. Completely reef-safe and won't harm corals or invertebrates. Excellent algae grazer that helps control nuisance algae naturally.

Fun Facts

  • Possess retractable scalpel-like spines on tail base - handle with care
  • Color pattern is unique among tangs with distinctive white face and yellow fins
  • Can change color intensity based on mood and time of day
  • Often rest in caves at night, sometimes lying on their side
  • Can live 10-15 years in captivity with proper care
  • Native to the Western Pacific from Japan to Australia

Special Care Tips

  • Feeding: Feed 2-3 times daily with emphasis on algae-based foods. Use veggie clips for nori sheets
  • Acclimation: Can be sensitive to changes - use extended drip acclimation (60-90 minutes)
  • Disease Prevention: Susceptible to marine ich and lateral line erosion - maintain excellent water quality and varied diet
  • Quarantine: Highly recommended 2-4 week quarantine period before adding to display tank
  • Tank Maturity: Best added to established tanks (6+ months) with natural algae growth
  • Stress Reduction: Provide plenty of hiding spots and minimize disturbances during acclimation period
  • Water Quality: Sensitive to poor water quality - maintain low nitrates and stable parameters
