Description

The Foxface Rabbitfish is one of the most popular and effective algae-eating reef fish in the aquarium hobby. Known for its bright yellow body, bold black facial mask, and peaceful personality, this species is both highly functional and visually striking in reef systems.

Hardy, active, and long-lived, Foxface Rabbitfish are excellent utility fish for controlling nuisance algae while still adding strong visual impact to the aquarium. They are reef safe in most systems but should always be handled carefully due to venomous dorsal spines.

Scientific Name

Siganus vulpinus

Common Names

  • Foxface Rabbitfish
  • One Spot Foxface (variant confusion in trade)
  • Yellow Foxface

Care Level

Easy to Moderate

Temperament

Peaceful to Semi-aggressive (with similar species)

Reef Safe

Yes — generally reef safe, may nip soft corals if underfed

Minimum Tank Size

300L+

Maximum Size

Around 20cm

Lifespan

8–12+ years with proper care

Natural Habitat

Foxface Rabbitfish are found across the Indo-Pacific, inhabiting coral reefs, lagoons, and outer reef slopes. They graze constantly on algae growing on rock surfaces and are often seen in pairs or loose groups.

Their bright coloration acts as both camouflage among corals and a warning signal to predators.

Diet & Feeding

Foxface Rabbitfish are primarily herbivores and excellent natural algae controllers.

Recommended Foods

  • Marine algae sheets (nori)
  • Spirulina pellets and flakes
  • Herbivore marine pellets
  • Macroalgae (natural grazing)
  • Frozen herbivore blends
  • Occasional mysis shrimp

Feed 1–2 times daily with a strong focus on plant-based nutrition.

Water Parameters

Recommended Parameters

  • Salinity: 1.024–1.026
  • Temperature: 24–26°C
  • pH: 8.1–8.4
  • Ammonia: 0ppm
  • Nitrite: 0ppm
  • Nitrate: <15ppm

Stable reef conditions with good oxygenation are ideal.

Tank Setup

Foxface Rabbitfish require spacious aquariums with strong grazing surfaces and open swimming areas.

Ideal Setup Includes

  • Large live rock with algae growth
  • Open water column space
  • Moderate to strong flow
  • Secure lid (active swimmers and potential jumpers)
  • Stable reef environment

They are highly active grazers and benefit from mature systems.

Compatibility

Foxface Rabbitfish are generally peaceful and work well in most reef communities.

Common Compatible Tank Mates

  • Clownfish
  • Tangs
  • Wrasses
  • Gobies
  • Blennies
  • Dwarf angelfish
  • Anthias

Use Caution With

  • Other rabbitfish in smaller systems
  • Highly aggressive triggers or large predatory fish
  • Overcrowded systems where feeding competition is high

They may occasionally nip soft corals if diet is insufficient.

Common Mistakes

Not Feeding Enough Greens

A lack of algae-based foods can lead to coral nipping or poor body condition.

Underestimating Venomous Spines

Their dorsal spines are venomous and can cause a painful sting if handled incorrectly.

Keeping in Small Tanks

They are active swimmers and require significant space to thrive long term.

Poor Tank Maturity

They perform best in established aquariums with natural algae growth.

Fun Facts

  • Foxface Rabbitfish can dramatically change colour when sleeping or stressed, often darkening their body.
  • They are one of the most reliable natural algae control fish in reef aquariums.
  • Despite their name, they are not true tangs but belong to the rabbitfish family.
  • Their venomous spines are a primary defence mechanism against predators.
