About the Fire Clownfish (Amphiprion melanopus)
The Fire Clownfish, also known as the Red and Black Clownfish or Cinnamon Clownfish, is a bold and vibrant species featuring a deep orange-red body with a distinctive white headband and black fins. More robust and assertive than the common Ocellaris, this species brings intense color and strong personality to reef aquariums. Their striking appearance and hardy nature make them a favorite among aquarists seeking something different from the standard clownfish.
Care Requirements
- Tank Size: Minimum 115 litres (30 gallons) due to their larger size and territorial nature
- Diet: Omnivorous - accepts marine pellets, flakes, frozen mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and meaty foods
- Water Parameters: Temperature 24-27°C, pH 8.1-8.4, salinity 1.023-1.025
- Feeding Frequency: 2-3 times daily, slightly more aggressive feeders than Ocellaris
- Experience Level: Beginner to Intermediate - hardy but more territorial than other clownfish
Tank Compatibility
Generally reef-safe but more territorial and aggressive than Ocellaris clownfish. Best kept as a single fish or established pair. Can be assertive toward other clownfish and similarly sized fish, especially in smaller tanks. May defend their territory vigorously, particularly around anemones. Compatible with larger, semi-aggressive fish and most peaceful species if given adequate space. Completely safe with corals and invertebrates. Strongly prefer hosting in Bubble Tip Anemones or similar species.
Fun Facts
- One of the most colorful clownfish species with their intense red-orange coloration
- More likely to host in anemones compared to other clownfish species
- Females can grow significantly larger than males (up to 12-14cm)
- Form extremely strong bonds with their anemone hosts and will defend them aggressively
- Can live 15-18 years in captivity
- Native to the Western Pacific, from Indonesia to Australia
Special Care Tips
- Tankmates: Choose robust tankmates that won't be intimidated. Avoid keeping with other clownfish unless tank is very large (450+ litres)
- Anemone Hosting: Strongly prefer Bubble Tip Anemones (Entacmaea quadricolor) and will usually host quickly
- Territory: Provide adequate space and rockwork to establish territory. May become more aggressive in smaller tanks
- Pairing: If keeping a pair, introduce smaller (male) fish first, then add larger (female) fish later, or introduce both simultaneously as juveniles
- Feeding: Enthusiastic eaters - ensure all tankmates get their share during feeding time
- Breeding: Readily breed in captivity and are excellent parents, guarding eggs diligently
