Coral Banded Shrimp — Pairs (Stenopus hispidus)

The Coral Banded Shrimp is one of the most striking and recognisable invertebrates in the marine hobby, featuring bold red and white banding with long, elegant white antennae. This listing is for mated pairs — the safest way to keep Coral Banded Shrimp, as unpaired individuals of the same sex will fight aggressively.

Care Requirements

  • Care Level: Beginner to Intermediate
  • Reef Safe: With caution — may occasionally pick at small, slow-moving fish and very small invertebrates
  • Diet: Carnivore — parasites from fish, meaty frozen foods, and detritus
  • Water Temperature: 24–27°C | Salinity: 1.023–1.025
  • Note: Sensitive to copper-based medications

Tank Compatibility

Keep only as a mated pair — two individuals of the same sex will fight to the death. Generally reef-safe with corals. May occasionally harass very small or slow-moving fish. Avoid housing with large predatory fish.

Fun Facts

Coral Banded Shrimp are one of the few shrimp species that form monogamous pairs and will defend their territory together. Mated pairs will breed regularly in the aquarium.
