The Arabica Cowrie is a striking marine snail known for its smooth, glossy shell covered in intricate dark markings that resemble Arabic script. Primarily nocturnal, this fascinating invertebrate spends its days hiding within rockwork and emerges at night to forage. Arabica Cowries are excellent scavengers and algae grazers, making them a unique addition to established marine aquariums. Their attractive appearance and interesting behaviour have made them a favourite among marine hobbyists looking for something different from traditional clean-up crew members.

Avoid these pitfalls

Common mistakes to avoid

Learn from these common pitfalls when caring for marine livestock.

  • Cowries rely on naturally occurring algae and biofilm, so mature aquariums provide the best environment.

  • Larger cowries may occasionally consume soft corals, polyps, or sessile invertebrates if insufficient food is available.

  • Like most marine invertebrates, Arabica Cowries are highly sensitive to copper and should never be kept in systems containing copper-based treatments.

Frequently asked questions

Find answers to common questions about our products and shipping.

  • Most Arabica Cowries are considered relatively reef safe, but larger specimens may occasionally graze on soft corals, zoanthids, or coral polyps if natural food sources become limited. Well-fed individuals are far less likely to cause problems.

  • Yes. Arabica Cowries are excellent additions to clean-up crews because they consume algae films, biofilm, detritus, and leftover food. They are particularly useful in mature reef aquariums with established live rock.

  • This is completely normal behaviour. Arabica Cowries are nocturnal scavengers that spend daylight hours hidden within rockwork and become active after lights dim. Many owners only see them regularly during evening hours.

  • Healthy Arabica Cowries can usually right themselves using their muscular foot. However, if they remain upside down for extended periods, especially on bare substrate, they may become stressed and should be assisted.

  • Most specimens reach between 8 and 10 cm in length, making them one of the larger cowrie species commonly available to marine aquarium hobbyists.

  • Supplement their diet with dried seaweed sheets (nori), algae wafers, and quality marine foods. Providing additional food is especially important in very clean aquariums where natural grazing opportunities are limited.
