About the Gold Slingjaw Wrasse (Epibulus insidiator)

The Gold Slingjaw Wrasse is a remarkable and unique fish featuring a golden-yellow body and one of the most extraordinary feeding mechanisms in the fish world. They possess highly specialized jaws that can extend forward up to 65% of their body length to capture prey - hence the name "slingjaw." This fascinating adaptation makes them incredible hunters and endlessly entertaining to observe. Their beautiful golden coloration and unusual feeding behavior make them prized additions for experienced aquarists with appropriate setups.

Care Requirements

  • Tank Size: Minimum 300 litres (75 gallons), preferably 450+ litres due to their active nature and adult size (up to 35cm)
  • Diet: Carnivorous - requires meaty foods including frozen mysis shrimp, krill, chopped seafood, and will hunt small fish and crustaceans
  • Water Parameters: Temperature 24-27°C, pH 8.1-8.4, salinity 1.023-1.025
  • Substrate: Requires sand bed (5-8cm deep) for burrowing at night
  • Experience Level: Advanced - requires large tank and careful tankmate selection

Tank Compatibility

Semi-aggressive and NOT fully reef-safe. Compatible with other semi-aggressive to aggressive fish of similar or larger size. Will eat small fish, shrimp, and small crabs - not suitable for tanks with small gobies, blennies, or ornamental shrimp. May be kept with larger tangs, angelfish, and other robust fish. Safe with corals but will hunt any small fish or crustaceans. Best in FOWLR or aggressive reef setups. Their impressive jaw extension allows them to catch surprisingly large prey. Avoid with timid or small fish.
