About the Adult Male Scribbled Angelfish (Chaetodontoplus duboulayi)
The Adult Male Scribbled Angelfish is a rare and spectacular Australian endemic species featuring intricate blue "scribbled" markings across a cream to yellow body. Males are particularly stunning with more vibrant coloration and pronounced markings compared to females. This species displays a beautiful pattern of fine blue lines and dots that create a hand-painted appearance, along with yellow to orange highlights on the fins. Native exclusively to the Great Barrier Reef and Coral Sea, the Scribbled Angelfish is one of Australia's most prized and sought-after marine fish, rarely available in the aquarium trade.
Care Requirements
- Tank Size: Minimum 400 litres (100 gallons), preferably 600+ litres for adults
- Diet: Omnivorous - requires varied diet including sponge-based foods, marine algae, spirulina, mysis shrimp, and quality angelfish preparations
- Water Parameters: Temperature 23-26°C, pH 8.1-8.4, salinity 1.023-1.025
- Swimming Space: Active swimmer requiring open areas and extensive rockwork
- Experience Level: Advanced - rare species requiring stable conditions, specialized care, and experienced aquarist
Tank Compatibility
Generally peaceful for a large angelfish but can be territorial toward other angelfish. Best kept as the only angelfish in systems under 750 litres. Males may show more territorial behavior than females. Compatible with most peaceful to semi-aggressive fish including tangs, wrasses, and larger peaceful species. NOT REEF-SAFE - will nip at coral polyps, clam mantles, and other sessile invertebrates. Best suited for FOWLR (Fish Only With Live Rock) systems. Can be shy initially and may be intimidated by overly aggressive tank mates.
