Sand Sifting Starfish (Astropecten polycanthus) Description
The Sand Sifting Starfish is a popular substrate-dwelling starfish prized for its ability to continuously turn over and clean marine aquarium sand beds. Spending most of its life beneath the substrate, this fascinating echinoderm helps aerate the sand while consuming detritus, organic matter, worms, microfauna, and other organisms living within the substrate. Its constant burrowing activity can contribute to a cleaner and healthier sand bed, making it a popular choice for larger reef aquariums. Due to its specialised feeding requirements, the Sand Sifting Starfish is best suited to mature aquariums with large, established sand beds.

Carnivore & Microfauna Predator – Sand Sifting Starfish feed on worms, small crustaceans, microfauna, detritus, organic matter, molluscs, and other organisms living within the sand bed. They obtain most of their nutrition by hunting through the substrate and rarely accept prepared foods. Large, mature sand beds are essential to provide adequate long-term nutrition.
Avoid these pitfalls
Common mistakes to avoid
Learn from these common pitfalls when caring for marine livestock.
-
Many aquariums do not contain enough sand bed area or natural food sources to support a Sand Sifting Starfish long term. -
Most Sand Sifting Starfish rely on live organisms within the substrate rather than prepared aquarium foods. -
A single starfish can quickly deplete beneficial microfauna populations in smaller aquariums, eventually leading to starvation.

-
Sand Sifting Starfish primarily feed on worms, copepods, amphipods, tiny crustaceans, molluscs, detritus, and other microscopic organisms living within the sand bed. They do not survive solely by eating waste or leftover fish food. -
Many reef aquariums simply do not contain enough live food within the substrate to support them long term. Once the sand bed's microfauna population is depleted, the starfish may slowly starve despite appearing healthy initially. -
Most experienced aquarists recommend waiting at least 12 months before adding a Sand Sifting Starfish. Mature sand beds contain significantly more microfauna and natural food sources than newly established systems. -
Absolutely. They are hardy, effective algae grazers, and easy to care for in most reef systems.
-
This is completely normal. Sand Sifting Starfish spend much of their lives buried beneath the substrate searching for food and may disappear for days or even weeks before reappearing. -
Yes. Sand Sifting Starfish do not consume SPS corals, LPS corals, soft corals, zoanthids, anemones, or fish. They are considered reef safe, although they may reduce populations of beneficial sand-dwelling organisms over time.
