Care Requirements

  • Care Level: Intermediate
  • Temperament: Peaceful to semi-aggressive
  • Reef Safe: With caution — may nip at coral polyps and small invertebrates
  • Diet: Omnivore — algae, frozen mysis, brine shrimp, and meaty prepared foods; benefits from a varied diet
  • Max Size: ~12cm
  • Minimum Tank Size: 150L
  • Water Temperature: 24–27°C | Salinity: 1.020–1.025

Tank Compatibility

Generally peaceful with most fish. May nip at coral polyps and small invertebrates, so best suited to fish-only or FOWLR systems, or reef tanks with robust, large-polyp corals. Avoid housing with very aggressive species.

Fun Facts

Filefish are named for their rough, sandpaper-like skin. They are closely related to triggerfish and share their ability to lock their dorsal spine upright as a defence mechanism.
