About the Neon Wrasse (Halichoeres biocellatus)

The Neon Wrasse, also known as the Biocellate Wrasse or Red-Lined Wrasse, is a small but brilliantly colored fish featuring electric blue and green horizontal stripes with orange-red accents. This active and peaceful wrasse brings vibrant color and constant movement to reef aquariums. Their small size and energetic personality make them delightful additions to community tanks, while their appetite for small invertebrates provides natural pest control.

Care Requirements

  • Tank Size: Minimum 115 litres (30 gallons) due to active swimming
  • Diet: Carnivorous - requires meaty foods including frozen mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and finely chopped seafood. Will hunt small crustaceans
  • Water Parameters: Temperature 24-27°C, pH 8.1-8.4, salinity 1.023-1.025
  • Substrate: Requires sand bed (5-8cm deep) for burrowing at night
  • Experience Level: Beginner to Intermediate - hardy and adaptable

Tank Compatibility

Peaceful and generally reef-safe with caution. Excellent community fish compatible with most peaceful species including clownfish, gobies, blennies, and tangs. May show mild territorial behavior toward other small wrasses. Safe with larger, peaceful wrasses if introduced simultaneously. Will hunt small crustaceans including ornamental shrimp, tiny crabs, and bristleworms. Safe with most corals. Excellent for controlling flatworms and other small pests. Too small to bother larger fish and too peaceful to harass smaller fish.

Fun Facts

  • One of the smaller wrasse species, typically staying under 10cm
  • Burrow into sand at night for sleeping - may "disappear" at lights-out
  • Excellent natural pest controllers, especially for flatworms
  • Very active during the day, constantly exploring the aquarium
  • Can change color intensity based on mood and lighting
  • May jump when startled - secure lid recommended

Special Care Tips

  • Sand Bed: Provide 5-8cm of fine sand for burrowing - essential for their wellbeing
  • Secure Lid: Can jump, especially when new - use tight-fitting lid
  • Acclimation: May burrow for first 24 hours after introduction - normal behavior
  • Feeding: Feed 2-3 times daily with small portions. Eager eaters once established
  • Invertebrate Caution: Will eat ornamental shrimp and very small snails
  • Reef Safety: Generally safe but may occasionally nip at small feather dusters or tube worms
  • Activity Level: Very active - provide open swimming space and rockwork to explore
