About the Male Green Leopard Wrasse (Macropharyngodon meleagris)
The Male Green Leopard Wrasse is one of the most spectacular wrasses in the aquarium hobby, featuring an intense emerald green body adorned with vibrant red spots and intricate patterns. Males display dramatically more vivid coloration than females, with iridescent green, blue, and red hues that shimmer under aquarium lighting. This species represents the pinnacle of wrasse keeping, prized by advanced aquarists for their breathtaking beauty and fascinating sand-dwelling behavior, though they demand specialized care and patience.
Care Requirements
- Tank Size: Minimum 190 litres (50 gallons) with established sand bed
- Diet: Carnivorous - requires live foods initially (live brine shrimp, copepods), transitioning to frozen mysis, brine shrimp, and finely chopped seafood. Needs live rock with abundant microfauna
- Water Parameters: Temperature 24-27°C, pH 8.1-8.4, salinity 1.023-1.025
- Substrate: ESSENTIAL - requires 8-10cm of fine, mature sand bed for burrowing and feeding
- Experience Level: Advanced to Expert - very challenging to acclimate and maintain
Tank Compatibility
Peaceful and reef-safe. Excellent community fish once established, compatible with most peaceful species. Will not bother other fish and should not be kept with aggressive or competitive feeders. Can be kept with females of the same species (will form pairs or harems). Safe with all corals and most invertebrates. May hunt microfauna in sand bed. Best in peaceful community tanks with non-aggressive feeders. Avoid with boisterous, fast-eating fish that may outcompete for food.
Fun Facts
- Males are among the most colorful fish in the reef aquarium hobby
- Spend hours hunting in sand bed for tiny crustaceans, worms, and microfauna
- Burrow completely into sand at night and when stressed - may vanish for days
- Males develop from females through sex change (protogynous hermaphrodites)
- One of the most challenging but rewarding fish to successfully maintain
- Can live 5-8 years with expert care and proper environment
- Native to the Indo-Pacific, particularly around coral-rich areas
Special Care Tips
- Tank Maturity: CRITICAL - only add to very mature tanks (12+ months) with thriving microfauna population in sand bed
- Sand Bed: Requires 8-10cm of fine, mature sand with established copepods, amphipods, and worms - absolutely essential
- Feeding Challenge: Often refuse all prepared foods initially. May require live foods for weeks or months before transitioning
- Acclimation: Extended drip acclimation (90-120 minutes). Will likely hide in sand for several days to weeks - extreme patience required
- Quarantine: Extremely difficult to quarantine due to specialized feeding and substrate needs - consider tank transfer method or skip quarantine
- Peaceful Environment: Avoid aggressive feeders, boisterous fish, or competitive eaters. Best with other peaceful, methodical feeders
- Not for Beginners: High failure rate with inexperienced aquarists - ensure you can meet their specialized needs before purchasing
- Secure Lid: Can jump when startled or stressed
