About the Longnose Butterflyfish (Forcipiger flavissimus)

The Longnose Butterflyfish is a striking and elegant fish featuring a bright yellow body with a distinctive elongated snout and black head markings. This beautiful species uses its specialized long snout to probe crevices and pick at small invertebrates. Their graceful swimming and unique appearance make them attractive additions to aquariums, though they require careful consideration as they are NOT reef-safe and have specific dietary needs. Best suited for experienced aquarists with appropriate FOWLR setups.

Care Requirements

  • Tank Size: Minimum 300 litres (75 gallons)
  • Diet: Carnivorous - requires meaty foods including frozen mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, chopped seafood, and will pick at small invertebrates. Can be finicky eaters initially
  • Water Parameters: Temperature 24-27°C, pH 8.1-8.4, salinity 1.023-1.025
  • Feeding Frequency: 2-3 times daily, may require frequent feeding
  • Experience Level: Advanced - NOT reef-safe and can be difficult to feed

Tank Compatibility

Peaceful toward fish but NOT reef-safe. Compatible with most peaceful to semi-aggressive fish. Will not bother other fish but will eat coral polyps, tube worms, small anemones, and other sessile invertebrates. Best for FOWLR systems only. May be shy initially and can be outcompeted for food by aggressive feeders. Best with other peaceful to semi-aggressive fish. Not suitable for reef tanks with corals or sessile invertebrates. Their specialized feeding behavior requires careful tankmate selection.

Fun Facts

  • Possess one of the longest snouts relative to body size among butterflyfish
  • Use their elongated snout like tweezers to extract prey from tight crevices
  • Can be challenging to feed initially but usually adapt to prepared foods
  • Very graceful swimmers with elegant movements
  • Can live 10-15 years in captivity with proper care
  • Native to the Indo-Pacific region

Special Care Tips

  • NOT Reef-Safe: Will eat coral polyps, tube worms, and sessile invertebrates - FOWLR only
  • Feeding Challenge: May be finicky eaters initially. Offer varied meaty foods and be patient
  • Acclimation: Use extended drip acclimation (60-90 minutes). May be shy initially
  • Peaceful Tankmates: Avoid aggressive feeders that may outcompete them for food
  • Hiding Spots: Provide rockwork with crevices - they appreciate secure areas
  • Feeding Frequency: May need more frequent feeding than other fish due to specialized diet
  • Tank Type: Best in FOWLR systems with peaceful to semi-aggressive fish
