About the Bicolor Blenny (Ecsenius bicolor)

The Bicolor Blenny is a charming and distinctive fish featuring a unique two-tone coloration with a brown to purple front half and bright yellow to orange rear half, separated by a clear division. This entertaining blenny brings personality and color to reef aquariums with their characteristic perching behavior and curious expressions. Their small size, peaceful nature, and reef-safe habits make them excellent additions to community tanks, while their algae-grazing helps control nuisance growth.

Care Requirements

  • Tank Size: Minimum 75 litres (20 gallons), though larger tanks are better
  • Diet: Omnivorous with herbivorous preference - requires marine algae, spirulina, nori sheets, and will accept meaty foods. Grazes on microalgae
  • Water Parameters: Temperature 24-27°C, pH 8.1-8.4, salinity 1.023-1.025
  • Feeding Frequency: 2-3 times daily, supplement with algae-based foods
  • Experience Level: Beginner - hardy and adaptable

Tank Compatibility

Peaceful and completely reef-safe. Excellent community fish compatible with most peaceful species. May show territorial behavior toward other blennies or similar bottom-dwelling fish in smaller tanks. Best kept as single blenny unless tank is very large. Compatible with clownfish, gobies, tangs, and other peaceful fish. Completely safe with all corals and invertebrates. Helps control microalgae growth through constant grazing. Their entertaining perching behavior and curious personality make them delightful to observe.
