About the Lawnmower Blenny (Salarias fasciatus)

The Lawnmower Blenny is one of the most popular and useful fish in the reef aquarium hobby. Named for its constant grazing behavior that resembles a lawnmower moving across your rockwork, this charming fish is both functional and entertaining. With its mottled brown and tan coloration, expressive eyes, and endearing personality, the Lawnmower Blenny quickly becomes a favorite among aquarists.

Care Requirements

  • Tank Size: Minimum 115 litres (30 gallons), though larger tanks provide more grazing area
  • Diet: Primarily herbivorous - grazes on microalgae and film algae. Supplement with nori sheets, spirulina, and herbivore pellets. May accept meaty foods occasionally
  • Water Parameters: Temperature 24-27°C, pH 8.1-8.4, salinity 1.023-1.025
  • Algae Control: Excellent natural algae controller, constantly grazing on rockwork and glass
  • Experience Level: Beginner to Intermediate - hardy and adaptable once established

Tank Compatibility

Peaceful and reef-safe, Lawnmower Blennies are excellent community fish. They coexist well with most peaceful species including clownfish, gobies, tangs, and angelfish. Generally ignore other fish unless they're competing blennies. May show territorial behavior toward other blennies or similar bottom-dwelling fish in smaller tanks. Completely reef-safe and won't harm corals, though they may perch on them. Safe with all invertebrates.

Fun Facts

  • Can "hop" along the substrate and rockwork using their pelvic fins
  • Often perch in amusing positions, watching the aquarium activity with curious expressions
  • Have been known to recognize their owners and display personality
  • Their constant grazing helps control nuisance algae naturally
  • Can live 4-6 years in captivity with proper care
  • Sometimes rest in caves or crevices at night, occasionally in unusual positions

Special Care Tips

  • Algae Availability: Ensure established tank with natural algae growth before adding. Supplement diet if algae is insufficient
  • Feeding: Use veggie clips for nori sheets. May take time to accept prepared foods - patience is key
  • Jumping Risk: Secure lid required as they may jump, especially when startled or during acclimation
  • Territory: Provide plenty of rockwork with caves and perching spots. One per tank unless very large system
  • Acclimation: Can be sensitive to changes - use slow drip acclimation method for 45-60 minutes
  • Tank Maturity: Best added to established tanks (3+ months old) with natural algae growth
