About the Lamarck Angelfish (Genicanthus lamarck)
The Lamarck Angelfish, also known as the Freckled Angelfish or Blackstriped Angelfish, is an elegant and peaceful angelfish featuring a white to silver body with distinctive black horizontal stripes and yellow accents. This species belongs to the Genicanthus genus, known as the "swallowtail angels," which are among the only truly reef-safe large angelfish. Males develop elongated tail filaments and more vibrant coloration. Their peaceful temperament, reef-safe nature, and graceful swimming make them prized additions to larger reef aquariums.
Care Requirements
- Tank Size: Minimum 450 litres (120 gallons) due to their active swimming and adult size (up to 20-25cm)
- Diet: Omnivorous with planktivorous preference - requires varied diet including mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, spirulina, marine algae, and quality pellets. Feed multiple times daily
- Water Parameters: Temperature 24-27°C, pH 8.1-8.4, salinity 1.023-1.025
- Swimming Space: Very active swimmer requiring extensive open swimming areas
- Experience Level: Intermediate to Advanced - requires large tank and stable water quality
Tank Compatibility
Peaceful and completely reef-safe. One of the few large angelfish that won't nip corals or sessile invertebrates. Compatible with most peaceful to semi-aggressive fish. Can be kept with other Genicanthus species or even in harems (one male with multiple females) in very large tanks (750+ litres). May show mild territorial behavior toward conspecifics but generally peaceful. Excellent community fish for large reef aquariums. Safe with all corals, clams, and invertebrates. Their planktivorous nature means they won't bother sessile organisms.
