About the Golden Midas Blenny (Ecsenius midas)

The Golden Midas Blenny is a stunning and active fish featuring a vibrant golden-yellow to orange body that shimmers under aquarium lighting. Unlike most blennies that perch on rocks, this species is a midwater swimmer that often mimics the behavior of anthias or chromis, hovering in the water column. Their brilliant coloration, peaceful nature, and entertaining swimming behavior make them attractive additions to reef aquariums. Completely reef-safe and hardy once established.

Care Requirements

  • Tank Size: Minimum 115 litres (30 gallons)
  • Diet: Omnivorous - requires varied diet including marine algae, spirulina, mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and quality pellets. More omnivorous than other blennies
  • Water Parameters: Temperature 24-27°C, pH 8.1-8.4, salinity 1.023-1.025
  • Feeding Frequency: 2-3 times daily
  • Experience Level: Intermediate - hardy but may jump and requires varied diet

Tank Compatibility

Peaceful and completely reef-safe. Excellent community fish compatible with most peaceful species. Unlike other blennies, they swim in the water column rather than perching on rocks. May show mild territorial behavior toward other blennies or similar fish. Best kept singly unless tank is very large. Compatible with clownfish, gobies, tangs, and other peaceful fish. Completely safe with all corals and invertebrates. Their midwater swimming adds unique movement to the aquarium.

Special Care Tips

  • Secure Lid: ESSENTIAL - known jumpers, especially when startled or new
  • Feeding Variety: Offer both meaty and algae-based foods - more omnivorous than other blennies
  • Acclimation: Use slow drip acclimation (45-60 minutes). May be shy initially

  • Reef Safety: Completely safe with all corals and invertebrates
  • Color Maintenance: Vibrant color maintained with quality varied diet

Good looking, healthy young Midas blenny. Disappointed it has disappeared for over a week with no sign anywhere. Good service and well packaged.
