About the Fire Goby (Nemateleotris magnifica)

The Fire Goby, also known as the Firefish or Magnificent Dartfish, is a stunning and popular fish featuring a white to pale yellow front half transitioning to vibrant red-orange rear half, with an elongated dorsal fin. This peaceful and graceful fish brings both color and elegance to reef aquariums. Their shy but peaceful nature and small size make them excellent additions to community tanks, while their hovering behavior adds unique movement to the aquarium. They are completely reef-safe and beginner-friendly.

Care Requirements

  • Tank Size: Minimum 75 litres (20 gallons), though larger tanks are better
  • Diet: Carnivorous - requires meaty foods including frozen mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and finely chopped seafood. Feed small portions multiple times daily
  • Water Parameters: Temperature 24-27°C, pH 8.1-8.4, salinity 1.023-1.025
  • Feeding Frequency: 2-3 times daily with small portions
  • Experience Level: Beginner - hardy and peaceful

Tank Compatibility

Very peaceful and completely reef-safe. Excellent community fish compatible with other peaceful species. Can be shy, especially with aggressive or boisterous tankmates. Best kept singly or in bonded pairs (difficult to pair unless purchased together). May be bullied by aggressive fish. Compatible with clownfish, gobies, blennies, and peaceful wrasses. Completely safe with all corals and invertebrates. May hide frequently if kept with aggressive fish. Best in peaceful community tanks.

Fun Facts

  • Hover in the water column near their burrow, darting in when threatened
  • Elongated dorsal fin is held erect when displaying or feeling secure
  • Can jump when startled - secure lid essential
  • Often form monogamous pairs that share a burrow
  • May "disappear" into rockwork when stressed but usually re-emerge
  • Can live 5-7 years in captivity

Special Care Tips

  • Secure Lid: ESSENTIAL - known jumpers, especially when startled or new
  • Peaceful Tankmates: Avoid aggressive or boisterous fish that may stress them
  • Hiding Spots: Provide caves or overhangs where they can retreat
  • Pairing: Can be kept in pairs if bonded, but may fight if not compatible
  • Feeding: May be shy feeders - ensure they get food before aggressive eaters
  • Acclimation: May hide for first few days - normal behavior
  • Reef Safety: Completely safe with all corals and invertebrates
