About the Pygmy Cherub Angelfish (Centropyge argi)

The Pygmy Cherub Angelfish, also known as the Cherubfish or Purple Fireball, is one of the smallest and most vibrant dwarf angelfish species available. This tiny beauty features a stunning deep purple to blue body with a bright orange to yellow face and chest, creating a dramatic two-tone appearance. Native to the Western Atlantic and Caribbean, this species is highly sought after for its brilliant coloration, small size, and excellent reef compatibility. Despite being one of the smallest angelfish, the Pygmy Cherub packs incredible color into its compact body.

Care Requirements

  • Tank Size: Minimum 150 litres (40 gallons), though 200+ litres preferred for long-term success
  • Diet: Omnivorous - requires varied diet including spirulina, marine algae, mysis shrimp, quality angelfish preparations, and occasional meaty foods
  • Water Parameters: Temperature 24-27°C, pH 8.1-8.4, salinity 1.023-1.025
  • Swimming Space: Moderately active, requires rockwork with caves and crevices
  • Experience Level: Intermediate - can be shy initially but hardy once established

Tank Compatibility

Generally peaceful and one of the best dwarf angelfish for smaller community tanks. Excellent with most peaceful species including clownfish, gobies, blennies, and peaceful wrasses. Due to small size, avoid housing with aggressive or predatory fish. May show territorial behavior toward other dwarf angelfish in smaller tanks - best kept as the only Centropyge species unless tank is large (300+ litres). REEF-SAFE - generally considered one of the safest dwarf angelfish for reef aquariums. Most specimens completely ignore corals and invertebrates, making this an excellent nano-reef choice.

Fun Facts

  • One of the smallest angelfish species, typically reaching only 6-8cm
  • Native to the Western Atlantic, Caribbean, and Gulf of Mexico
  • The dramatic purple and orange color combination is unique among dwarf angels
  • Can be quite shy and reclusive, especially when first introduced
  • Often hides in caves and crevices, darting out to feed
  • Despite small size, displays typical angelfish personality and behavior
  • Can live 5-8+ years in captivity with proper care
  • Perfect for nano-reef systems due to small adult size

Special Care Tips

  • Small Size: Perfect for smaller aquariums - one of the few angelfish suitable for nano-reef systems
  • Feeding: Feed 2-3 times daily with small portions - varied diet maintains vibrant coloration
  • Acclimation: Can be shy and sensitive - use extended drip acclimation (60+ minutes) and dim lights initially
  • Hiding Spots: Provide multiple small caves and crevices - they need secure retreats and spend time hiding
  • Reef Safe: Excellent choice for reef aquariums including nano-reefs
  • Peaceful Tank Mates: Avoid aggressive fish that may intimidate or prey on this small species
  • Patience Required: May take several weeks to become bold and confident - be patient during adjustment
  • Color Maintenance: Quality diet with spirulina and natural foods maintains brilliant purple and orange colors
