About the Checkerboard Wrasse (Halichoeres hortulanus)

The Checkerboard Wrasse is a stunning and active fish featuring an intricate pattern of green, blue, and pink checkerboard markings across its body. Males display more vibrant coloration with enhanced green and blue hues, while females and juveniles show more subdued patterns. This energetic wrasse brings constant activity and color to reef aquariums while providing natural pest control by hunting small invertebrates. Their playful behavior and beautiful patterns make them fascinating additions to community tanks.

Care Requirements

  • Tank Size: Minimum 190 litres (50 gallons) due to their active swimming behavior
  • Diet: Carnivorous - requires meaty foods including frozen mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, krill, and chopped seafood. Will hunt small crustaceans and worms
  • Water Parameters: Temperature 24-27°C, pH 8.1-8.4, salinity 1.023-1.025
  • Substrate: Requires sand bed (5-8cm deep) for burrowing at night
  • Experience Level: Intermediate - requires proper substrate and secure lid

Tank Compatibility

Peaceful to semi-aggressive and generally reef-safe with caution. Compatible with most peaceful to semi-aggressive fish. May show aggression toward other wrasses, especially similar species or those introduced later. Best kept as single specimen unless tank is very large. Will hunt small crustaceans including ornamental shrimp, small crabs, and bristleworms (beneficial for pest control). Safe with most corals but may disturb sand bed around coral bases. Excellent for controlling flatworms, pyramidellid snails, and other small pests. Avoid with very small, timid fish.

Fun Facts

  • Burrow into sand bed at night for sleeping - fascinating behavior to observe
  • Excellent natural pest controllers, hunting flatworms and small unwanted invertebrates
  • Males are more colorful than females, displaying enhanced green and blue coloration
  • Can "disappear" into the sand when startled, sometimes for hours
  • May jump when startled or during acclimation - secure lid essential
  • Can live 5-8 years in captivity

Special Care Tips

  • Sand Bed: ESSENTIAL - provide 5-8cm of fine sand for burrowing. Will not thrive without proper substrate
  • Secure Lid: Known jumpers, especially when new or startled - tight-fitting lid is mandatory
  • Acclimation: May hide in sand for first 24-48 hours - this is normal behavior
  • Feeding: Feed 2-3 times daily. May take a few days to start eating after introduction
  • Invertebrate Caution: Will eat ornamental shrimp, small snails, and small crabs - not suitable for invert-heavy tanks
  • Introduction: Add after tank is established and other fish are settled to reduce stress
  • Missing Fish: If fish "disappears," check sand bed - they often burrow when stressed
