About the Blueline Wrasse (Stethojulis albovittatus)

The Blueline Wrasse is a sleek and active fish featuring a streamlined body with distinctive horizontal blue stripes running along its length. This energetic wrasse brings constant movement and subtle beauty to reef aquariums. Their active swimming behavior and beneficial pest-control abilities make them functional additions to community tanks, while their peaceful nature allows them to coexist with most other fish species.

Care Requirements

  • Tank Size: Minimum 190 litres (50 gallons) due to their very active swimming behavior
  • Diet: Carnivorous - requires meaty foods including frozen mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and chopped seafood. Will hunt small crustaceans and worms
  • Water Parameters: Temperature 24-27°C, pH 8.1-8.4, salinity 1.023-1.025
  • Substrate: Requires sand bed (5-8cm deep) for burrowing at night
  • Experience Level: Intermediate - hardy but very active and may jump

Tank Compatibility

Peaceful and generally reef-safe with caution. Compatible with most peaceful to semi-aggressive fish. May show mild territorial behavior toward other wrasses. Best kept singly unless tank is very large. Will hunt small crustaceans including ornamental shrimp, tiny crabs, and bristleworms (beneficial for pest control). Safe with most corals. Excellent for controlling flatworms and other small pests. Very active swimmers that may stress very timid fish.

Fun Facts

  • Among the most active wrasses, constantly swimming and exploring
  • Burrow into sand at night for sleeping
  • Excellent natural pest controllers, especially for flatworms
  • Can change color intensity based on mood and time of day
  • Very fast swimmers with streamlined bodies built for speed
  • May jump when startled - secure lid essential

Special Care Tips

  • Sand Bed: Provide 5-8cm of fine sand for burrowing - essential for their wellbeing
  • Secure Lid: Known jumpers, especially when new - tight-fitting lid is mandatory
  • Swimming Space: Provide extensive open swimming areas - they are extremely active
  • Acclimation: May burrow for first 24 hours after introduction - normal behavior
  • Feeding: Feed 2-3 times daily. Very active metabolism requires regular feeding
  • Invertebrate Caution: Will eat ornamental shrimp and very small snails
  • Activity Level: One of the most active wrasses - not suitable for peaceful, slow-paced tanks
