About the Blue Ring Angelfish (Pomacanthus annularis)
The Blue Ring Angelfish is a magnificent large angelfish featuring stunning golden-yellow body coloration adorned with elegant blue diagonal stripes and a distinctive blue ring marking above the gill plate that gives this species its common name. Adults display a beautiful combination of yellow, blue, and orange hues with intricate blue striping patterns. This impressive Indo-Pacific species is highly prized for its beauty, size, and commanding presence in large marine aquariums. This is a premium 20CM+ specimen - a substantial, show-quality fish.
Care Requirements
- Tank Size: Minimum 450 litres (120 gallons) for this size, preferably 600-750+ litres for long-term success
- Diet: Omnivorous - requires varied diet including sponge-based foods, marine algae, spirulina, mysis shrimp, and quality angelfish preparations
- Water Parameters: Temperature 24-27°C, pH 8.1-8.4, salinity 1.023-1.025
- Swimming Space: Very active swimmer requiring substantial open areas and extensive rockwork
- Experience Level: Advanced - requires large tank, stable water quality, and specialized care
Tank Compatibility
Can be territorial and aggressive, especially toward other angelfish and similarly shaped fish. Best kept as the only large angelfish in the system. At 20CM+, this specimen is mature and may show typical adult territorial behavior. Compatible with larger tangs, groupers, lionfish, and other robust fish. NOT REEF-SAFE - will actively consume coral polyps, clam mantles, and other sessile invertebrates. Strictly for FOWLR (Fish Only With Live Rock) systems. May be dominant during feeding.
Fun Facts
- The distinctive blue ring marking above the gill is unique to this species and most prominent in adults

- Native to the Indo-Pacific from East Africa to Indonesia and the Philippines
- Also known as the Blue King Angelfish in some regions
- The diagonal blue stripes become more pronounced and beautiful as the fish matures
- Can live 15-20+ years with proper care
Special Care Tips
- Large Specimen Care: At 20CM+, this fish requires immediate placement in a large, well-established system
- Feeding: Feed 2-3 times daily with emphasis on sponge-based angelfish foods to maintain health and color
- Acclimation: Extended drip acclimation (90+ minutes) is critical for a specimen of this size
- Tank Size Critical: Do not compromise on tank size - this is a large, active fish that needs substantial space
- Water Quality: Maintain pristine conditions with robust filtration and regular water changes
- Territory: Provide plenty of rockwork and swimming space to reduce stress and territorial behavior
- Premium Specimen: This 20CM+ size represents a mature, show-quality fish - a true centerpiece
