About the Black Fin Herald's Angelfish (Centropyge "woodheadi")
The Black Fin Herald's Angelfish is a rare and striking color variant of the Herald's Angelfish featuring brilliant yellow body coloration contrasted with distinctive black fins. This uncommon variant is sometimes referred to as "woodheadi" though it's not officially recognized as a separate species - it's considered a regional color morph or variant of Centropyge heraldi. The dramatic contrast between the bright yellow body and jet-black fins makes this one of the most eye-catching dwarf angelfish available. Native to specific regions of the Western Pacific, this variant is rarely seen in the aquarium trade and highly sought after by collectors.
Care Requirements
- Tank Size: Minimum 200 litres (50 gallons), though 300+ litres preferred for long-term success
- Diet: Omnivorous - requires varied diet including spirulina, marine algae, mysis shrimp, quality angelfish preparations, and occasional meaty foods
- Water Parameters: Temperature 24-27°C, pH 8.1-8.4, salinity 1.023-1.025
- Swimming Space: Moderately active, requires rockwork with caves and grazing surfaces
- Experience Level: Beginner to Intermediate - hardy and adaptable like standard Herald's Angelfish
Tank Compatibility
Peaceful and excellent community fish, sharing the same gentle temperament as the standard Herald's Angelfish. Coexists well with most peaceful species including clownfish, gobies, blennies, and peaceful wrasses. May show mild territorial behavior toward other dwarf angelfish in smaller tanks - best kept as the only Centropyge species unless tank is large (450+ litres). REEF-SAFE - generally considered one of the safest dwarf angelfish for reef aquariums. Most specimens completely ignore corals and invertebrates, making this an excellent choice for reef tanks.
