The Australian Stripey is a bold, hardy, and highly underrated reef fish native to Australian waters. Known for its deep body shape and strong black-and-white vertical striping, this species brings serious presence to any marine aquarium.
Often found around rocky reefs and coastal structures, Stripeys are tough, adaptable, and long-lived. While they are relatively peaceful as juveniles, adults can become more assertive, especially in smaller systems or when competing for food.
This is a great “character fish” for Australian reef tanks looking for something different from the usual tangs and clownfish.
Scientific Name
Microcanthus strigatus
Common Names
- Australian Stripey
- Stripey
- Striped Butterfish
Care Level
Easy to Moderate
Temperament
Semi-aggressive (more assertive as adults)
Reef Safe
Generally yes — may nip small invertebrates in some cases
Minimum Tank Size
200L+
Maximum Size
Up to 15–18cm
Lifespan
8–15 years with proper care
Natural Habitat
Australian Stripeys are found along the eastern and southern coastlines of Australia, inhabiting rocky reefs, jetties, and coastal drop-offs. They are commonly seen in schools when young, gradually becoming more solitary and territorial as they mature.
Diet & Feeding
Stripeys are omnivores with a strong preference for meaty foods but will also graze and accept prepared diets readily.
Recommended Foods
- Frozen mysis shrimp
- Brine shrimp
- Marine pellets
- Chopped seafood
- Krill
- Algae-based pellets
Feed 1–2 times daily with a varied diet to support growth and coloration.
Water Parameters
Recommended Parameters
- Salinity: 1.024–1.026
- Temperature: 22–25°C
- pH: 8.1–8.4
- Ammonia: 0ppm
- Nitrite: 0ppm
- Nitrate: <20ppm
They tolerate slightly cooler reef conditions compared to many tropical species.
Tank Setup
Australian Stripeys are active swimmers and do best in well-structured aquariums with open space.
Ideal Setup Includes
- Rockwork for shelter
- Open swimming zones
- Moderate flow
- Secure lid (can jump when startled)
- Strong filtration (they are messy eaters)
They adapt well to both reef and fish-only systems.
Compatibility
Stripeys are generally peaceful when young but can become territorial with age.
Common Compatible Tank Mates
- Tangs (in larger systems)
- Clownfish
- Wrasses
- Foxface
- Larger gobies
- Dwarf angelfish
Use Caution With
- Small shrimp and very small inverts
- Passive nano fish
- Other Stripeys in confined spaces
- Overly timid species
Best kept in systems with similarly sized, active fish.
Common Mistakes
Underestimating Adult Behaviour
Juvenile Stripeys are peaceful, but adults become more confident and territorial.
Keeping in Small Tanks
They need swimming space and territory, especially as they mature.
Mixing With Tiny Invertebrates
Some individuals may opportunistically nip small shrimp or ornamental inverts.
Poor Diet Variety
A mixed diet is important to maintain colour, energy, and long-term health.
Fun Facts
- Australian Stripeys are one of the few temperate-to-subtropical reef fish commonly kept in home aquariums.
- Juveniles often form schools for protection, but adults become more independent.
- Their bold striping provides camouflage among reef shadows and kelp zones.
- They are known for being highly curious and will often approach tank glass during feeding.
