Coral Goby (Gobiodon spp.)

What is a Coral Goby?

Coral Gobies (Gobiodon spp.) are a group of small, colourful reef fish commonly found living amongst the branches of Acropora and other SPS corals throughout the Indo-Pacific. Their compact size, vibrant colours, and fascinating behaviour make them a popular choice for nano reefs and larger marine aquariums alike.

These tiny gobies form close relationships with branching corals, using them as shelter, breeding sites, and protection from predators. Available in a variety of colours including green, yellow, citron, red, and brown, Coral Gobies bring personality and activity to reef aquariums without requiring significant swimming space.

Their peaceful nature and small adult size make them excellent additions to mixed reef systems, although they can become territorial towards other Coral Gobies in smaller aquariums.

Feeding

Coral Gobies are micro-predators that feed on tiny crustaceans and zooplankton in the wild.

Suitable foods include:

  • Mysis shrimp
  • Enriched brine shrimp
  • Copepods
  • Calanus
  • Finely chopped seafood
  • Small marine pellets
  • High-quality frozen foods

Feed once or twice daily with appropriately sized foods.

Tank Setup

A mature reef aquarium with plenty of live rock and branching coral structures is ideal. While they do not require SPS corals to survive, they are far more comfortable when provided with Acropora, Stylophora, Pocillopora, or similar branching corals for shelter.

Stable water quality and gentle to moderate flow are recommended.

Tank Mates

Suitable tank mates include:

  • Clownfish
  • Firefish
  • Blennies
  • Small wrasses
  • Cardinalfish
  • Dartfish
  • Other peaceful reef fish

Avoid housing with large predatory fish such as lionfish, groupers, large wrasses, or aggressive dottybacks.

Common Mistakes

Keeping Them With Aggressive Fish

Due to their tiny size, Coral Gobies can easily become stressed or preyed upon by larger tank mates.

Not Providing Adequate Shelter

These fish naturally spend much of their lives amongst branching corals and appreciate similar structures within the aquarium.

Feeding Foods That Are Too Large

Small mouths mean Coral Gobies require finely sized foods for successful feeding.

Assuming Multiple Gobies Will Always Get Along

While peaceful toward most fish, Coral Gobies can become territorial toward members of their own species, especially in smaller aquariums.

Introducing Them Into Immature Aquariums

A mature reef system with stable parameters improves long-term success and feeding opportunities.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are Coral Gobies reef safe?

Yes. Coral Gobies are considered reef safe and generally do not harm corals or other reef inhabitants.

How big do Coral Gobies get?

Most species reach between 3 and 5 cm in length.

Do Coral Gobies need SPS corals?

No, but they strongly prefer branching coral structures and will often use SPS corals as their primary home.

What do Coral Gobies eat?

They readily accept mysis shrimp, copepods, enriched brine shrimp, small pellets, and frozen marine foods.

Can Coral Gobies live in nano aquariums?

Yes. Their small size makes them excellent candidates for nano reef aquariums provided water quality remains stable.

Can I keep more than one Coral Goby?

In larger aquariums, compatible pairs can often coexist, but multiple individuals may become territorial if space is limited.
