The Yellow Coral Goby is a tiny, peaceful reef fish known for its bright yellow coloration, perch-like behaviour, and strong association with branching corals. Often seen hovering within SPS colonies or resting on coral branches, this species adds constant movement and natural behaviour to nano and reef aquariums.
Despite their small size, Yellow Coral Gobies are hardy when kept in stable, mature systems and make an excellent choice for reef tanks with low aggression and established coral structures.
Scientific Name
Gobiodon okinawae
Common Names
- Yellow Coral Goby
- Okinawa Goby
- Coral Goby
Care Level
Easy
Temperament
Peaceful (can be territorial with its chosen coral)
Reef Safe
Yes — completely reef safe
Minimum Tank Size
60L+
Maximum Size
Around 3–4cm
Lifespan
3–5+ years with proper care
Natural Habitat
Yellow Coral Gobies are found throughout Indo-Pacific coral reefs, especially among branching SPS corals such as Acropora. They live directly within coral colonies, using them for shelter, protection, and breeding.
Their close association with corals provides both safety and feeding opportunities from passing plankton and surface biofilm.
Diet & Feeding
Yellow Coral Gobies are small omnivores with a preference for microfoods.
Recommended Foods
- Frozen cyclops
- Copepods
- Baby brine shrimp (enriched)
- Finely crushed marine pellets
- Micro plankton blends
- Occasional frozen mysis (very small pieces)
Feed 1–2 times daily in small amounts due to their tiny size.
Water Parameters
Recommended Parameters
- Salinity: 1.024–1.026
- Temperature: 24–26°C
- pH: 8.1–8.4
- Ammonia: 0ppm
- Nitrite: 0ppm
- Nitrate: <10ppm
Stable, mature reef conditions are important for long-term health.
Tank Setup
Yellow Coral Gobies thrive in coral-dominated reef systems, particularly SPS tanks.
Ideal Setup Includes
- Branching SPS corals (Acropora, similar structures)
- Stable rockwork
- Moderate flow
- Low aggression tank mates
- Tight lid (small fish, can be lost easily)
- Mature reef environment
They often form a strong bond with a specific coral colony and rarely stray far from it.
Compatibility
Yellow Coral Gobies are peaceful and ideal for nano and reef community tanks.
Common Compatible Tank Mates
- Clownfish (peaceful species)
- Blennies
- Small wrasses (reef safe species)
- Firefish
- Cardinalfish
- Other nano gobies
Use Caution With
- Large or aggressive wrasses
- Predatory fish
- Overly active feeders that may outcompete them
- Fish that may damage coral colonies they inhabit
Common Mistakes
No Coral Host Available
They thrive best when provided branching coral to live within. Without it, they may feel exposed and stressed.
Overpowering Tank Mates
Their tiny size makes them vulnerable to competition during feeding.
Strong Uncontrolled Flow
While they enjoy flow, excessive turbulence can force them away from their coral home.
Not Accounting for Their Size
They are extremely small and can be lost or overlooked in large systems.
Fun Facts
- Yellow Coral Gobies live directly inside coral colonies for protection.
- They often form long-term pair bonds and share the same coral home.
- Their body shape is adapted to “cling” and perch within branching structures.
- They are one of the few fish that can safely coexist closely with SPS corals without damage.
