The Picasso Trigger is one of the most striking and intelligent marine fish in the aquarium hobby, famous for its bold geometric patterning of blue, yellow, and black markings that resemble abstract artwork.
This species is highly interactive, curious, and full of personality, but it is also one of the more aggressive reef fish commonly kept in captivity. It is best suited to large fish-only or carefully planned reef systems with robust tank mates.
Scientific Name
Rhinecanthus aculeatus
Common Names
- Picasso Trigger
- Lagoon Triggerfish
- Humu Picasso (Hawaiian trade name)
Care Level
Moderate to Advanced
Temperament
Highly aggressive / territorial
Reef Safe
No — will typically eat invertebrates (shrimp, crabs, snails) and may damage corals
Minimum Tank Size
500L+
Adult Size
Up to ~30cm
Lifespan
10–15+ years with proper care
Natural Habitat
Picasso Triggers are found throughout the Indo-Pacific in shallow lagoons, reef flats, and sandy rubble zones. They are highly territorial fish that actively defend their space and forage for crustaceans, molluscs, and other hard-shelled prey.
Their natural behaviour includes digging, rearranging substrate, and interacting boldly with their environment.
Diet & Feeding
Picasso Triggers are omnivorous with a strong carnivorous preference.
Recommended Foods
- Marine shrimp (mysis, krill)
- Chopped seafood (prawn, squid, mussel)
- High-quality marine pellets
- Crustaceans (in shell for beak conditioning)
- Frozen carnivore blends
Feed 1–2 times daily with varied protein-rich foods.
Water Parameters
- Temperature: 24–26°C
- Salinity: 1.024–1.026
- pH: 8.1–8.4
- Nitrate: <20ppm
- Ammonia/Nitrite: 0
Stable, clean water is important due to heavy feeding and waste output.
Tank Setup
Picasso Triggers require strong aquascapes and secure environments due to their strength and digging behaviour.
Ideal Setup Includes
- Large open swimming space
- Strong rock structures (secured base)
- Sand substrate for natural behaviour
- High filtration capacity
- Secure lid (excellent jumper)
They will often rearrange décor, so stability is essential.
Compatibility
Picasso Triggers are highly territorial and best kept with equally robust fish.
Compatible With
- Large tangs
- Groupers (carefully matched size)
- Large wrasses
- Lionfish (in FOWLR setups)
- Foxface
- Other strong marine fish
Use Extreme Caution With
- Shrimp, crabs, snails (will be eaten)
- Small or passive fish
- Reef invertebrates (not reef safe)
- Overcrowded community tanks
Common Mistakes
Keeping in Reef Tanks
They will typically destroy ornamental invertebrates and may damage coral systems.
Underestimating Aggression
They are intelligent and territorial, often dominating smaller fish.
Weak Aquascaping
They can easily move unsecured rocks and substrate.
Small Tank Keeping
They require large systems due to size and activity.
Fun Facts
- Picasso Triggers are highly intelligent and can recognise their owners
- They can produce a “clicking” sound using their teeth and jaw structures
- Their patterning is unique to each individual, like a fingerprint
- They use their strong teeth to crush shells and crustaceans
