Pearl Sharpnose Puffer (Canthigaster bennetti) — Charming & Characterful

The Pearl Sharpnose Puffer is a delightful and characterful marine fish, featuring a spotted body and the endearing, curious personality that pufferfish are famous for. Compact and relatively hardy, the Pearl Sharpnose is a popular choice for fish-only and mixed marine systems.

Care Requirements

  • Care Level: Intermediate
  • Temperament: Semi-aggressive — may nip at corals and invertebrates
  • Reef Safe: With caution — not recommended for reef tanks with corals or ornamental invertebrates
  • Diet: Omnivore — frozen mysis, brine shrimp, clams, snails, and meaty prepared foods; needs hard foods to wear down ever-growing teeth
  • Max Size: ~11cm
  • Minimum Tank Size: 150L
  • Water Temperature: 24–27°C | Salinity: 1.020–1.025

Tank Compatibility

Best kept in fish-only or FOWLR systems. May nip at coral polyps, clam mantles, and ornamental shrimp. Compatible with most fish of similar or larger size. Avoid housing with very small or slow-moving fish.

Fun Facts

Like all pufferfish, the Pearl Sharpnose can inflate its body with water when threatened. Its beak-like teeth grow continuously and must be worn down through a diet that includes hard-shelled prey.

Available from Aquamarine Aquaristic, Australia.
