Description

The Engineer Goby is a fascinating and highly underrated saltwater aquarium fish known for its eel-like body, bold striped juvenile pattern, and incredible burrowing behaviour. Despite the name, Engineer Gobies are not true gobies and are actually a species of dartfish.

Juveniles display striking black and white bands, while adults develop a more elongated body with yellow and brown horizontal striping. Their unique appearance and constant tunnel-building activity make them an eye-catching addition to larger marine aquariums.

Engineer Gobies are peaceful toward most reef fish but require stable rockwork and suitable substrate due to their extensive digging behaviour.

Scientific Name

Pholidichthys leucotaenia

Common Names

  • Engineer Goby
  • Engineer Fish
  • Convict Goby
  • False Goby

Care Level

Easy to Moderate

Temperament

Peaceful

Reef Safe

Generally yes — use caution with unsecured coral placement

Minimum Tank Size

250L+

Maximum Size

Up to 30–45cm

Lifespan

5–10+ years with proper care

Natural Habitat

Engineer Gobies originate from Indo-Pacific reef systems where they inhabit sandy lagoons and reef slopes. In the wild, they live in complex burrow systems, often in groups, constantly moving sand and rubble while searching for food.

Diet & Feeding

Engineer Gobies are carnivorous scavengers and are generally very easy to feed once established.

Recommended Foods

  • Frozen mysis shrimp
  • Brine shrimp
  • Marine pellets
  • Chopped seafood
  • Krill
  • Sinking carnivore foods

Feed 1–2 times daily with varied meaty foods to maintain body condition and long-term health.

Water Parameters

Recommended Parameters

  • Salinity: 1.024–1.026
  • Temperature: 24–26°C
  • pH: 8.1–8.4
  • Ammonia: 0ppm
  • Nitrite: 0ppm
  • Nitrate: <20ppm

Stable water quality is important, especially in reef aquariums.

Tank Setup

Engineer Gobies require aquariums with deep sand beds and stable rockwork due to their constant digging and tunnel creation.

Ideal Setup Includes

  • Deep sand substrate
  • Secure rock structures
  • Plenty of hiding areas
  • Moderate water flow
  • Tight-fitting lid
  • Open swimming space

Rockwork should always rest securely on the tank base rather than loose sand, as burrowing may destabilise structures over time.

Compatibility

Engineer Gobies are peaceful community fish and usually coexist well with most reef-safe species.

Common Compatible Tank Mates

  • Clownfish
  • Tangs
  • Wrasses
  • Foxface
  • Blennies
  • Larger gobies
  • Reef safe angelfish

Avoid Keeping With

  • Aggressive triggers
  • Large predatory groupers
  • Lionfish capable of swallowing juveniles
  • Highly territorial bottom dwellers

They may become territorial toward other Engineer Gobies unless kept as an established group.

Common Mistakes

Underestimating Adult Size

Juvenile Engineer Gobies are commonly sold small, but adults can become surprisingly large and thick-bodied.

Unsecured Rockwork

Their digging behaviour can undermine poorly supported rock structures, potentially causing collapses.

Keeping in Small Tanks

Their adult size and active burrowing behaviour make them unsuitable for nano aquariums.

Expecting Them to Stay Visible Constantly

Engineer Gobies spend much of their time weaving through tunnels and rockwork, especially during the day.

Fun Facts

  • Engineer Gobies are not true gobies despite their common name.
  • Juveniles and adults look dramatically different, causing many hobbyists to think they are separate species.
  • They create extensive tunnel systems underneath rockwork and substrate.
  • Some individuals form loose colonies in larger aquariums.
