The main issue with Copperband Butterflyfish is their feeding behaviour and long-term diet stability.

These fish often:

  • Refuse prepared foods long term
  • Pick inconsistently at live or frozen foods
  • Slowly reduce intake over time
  • Eventually suffer from chronic starvation

Even when they appear to be eating in store environments, this is often misleading. Many individuals will pick at food initially but fail to consume enough calories to sustain long-term health in captivity.

Over time, this leads to gradual decline, stress, and eventual mortality.

We also find that Copperbands do noticeably better when kept alongside other Copperband Butterflyfish that are already confidently feeding. In these situations, they often learn by observation and begin to recognise prepared foods more quickly. This “social feeding behaviour” can sometimes improve early success rates, although it still does not remove the long-term challenges this species faces in captivity.
