The Mandarin Dragonet (also known as the Mandarin Fish or Mandarin Goby) is one of the most beautiful and eye-catching saltwater fish available in the marine aquarium hobby. With its vibrant psychedelic colours, dragon-like appearance, and peaceful personality, it is easy to see why so many reef keepers fall in love with them instantly.
Unfortunately, the Mandarin Dragonet is also one of the most commonly impulse-purchased fish by beginner reef keepers. While they are hardy in the right environment, they require very specific care and feeding conditions to truly thrive in a reef aquarium.
The biggest challenge with keeping a Mandarin Dragonet is their diet. In the wild, these fish spend all day slowly hunting and grazing on tiny live organisms called copepods and other microfauna found throughout live rock and sand beds.
Unlike many marine fish, most Mandarin Dragonets will not immediately accept pellets or frozen foods when first introduced into captivity. Because of this, a newly established aquarium often cannot provide enough natural food for them to survive long term.
A healthy and mature reef tank with a stable copepod population is essential before considering a Mandarin Dragonet.
If you are planning to keep a Mandarin Dragonet, one of the best things you can do is establish a strong copepod population well before purchasing the fish.
I personally recommend seeding your aquarium with live copepods and allowing the tank to mature for around 12 months before introducing a Mandarin Dragonet. This gives the pod population enough time to establish itself naturally within your rockwork and filtration system.
You can seed your aquarium by purchasing bottles of live copepods from your local aquarium store. Personally, I have used the Coral Creatures brand with good success.
A refugium can also help massively by providing a safe breeding area for copepods away from predators in the main display tank.
Mandarin Dragonets are peaceful, shy, and relatively small marine fish. Because of their timid nature, they should be housed in a calm reef aquarium with plenty of live rock and hiding places.
Aggressive or highly competitive feeders can easily outcompete Mandarin Dragonets during feeding time, which is another reason why careful stocking choices are important.
Some captive-bred Mandarin Dragonets can be trained to eat frozen foods such as:
However, this should never be relied upon completely unless you have personally confirmed the fish is eating prepared foods consistently. Even captive-bred specimens benefit greatly from a healthy natural pod population.
The Mandarin Dragonet is truly one of the jewels of the reef aquarium hobby. Their colours, movement, and personality make them an incredible addition to the right marine tank.
But patience is key.
Allow your aquarium to mature properly, establish a strong copepod population, and provide plenty of rockwork and stability before bringing one home. If cared for correctly, these stunning fish can thrive and become one of the highlights of your reef tank for years to come.
