The Melanurus Wrasse is one of the most popular utility wrasses in reef aquariums, valued for both its beauty and its pest-eating behaviour. It is an active, intelligent fish that spends most of its day constantly moving through rockwork and sand in search of food.

With its striking colours and strong personality, it’s also one of those fish that brings a lot of visible activity and energy to a reef tank.

Behaviour & Utility Role

Melanurus Wrasses are natural hunters and scavengers. In aquariums, they are commonly used as biological pest control due to their appetite for small nuisance organisms.

They are known to help control:

  • Flatworms
  • Pyramid snails (including some species affecting corals like Montipora)
  • Small parasitic pests in rockwork
  • General micro-crustaceans in the substrate

Smaller or younger individuals are often especially effective at targeting tiny pests early on.

However, they will also consume many beneficial microfauna, so maintaining consistent feeding is important to prevent them from over-hunting the clean-up ecosystem.

Feeding & Diet

Melanurus Wrasses are generally excellent feeders in captivity and adapt quickly to prepared foods.

Recommended diet includes:

  • High-quality marine pellets
  • Frozen mysis and brine shrimp
  • Protein-rich mixed seafood
  • Occasional live or enriched foods for variety

A well-fed Melanurus Wrasse is far less likely to target ornamental invertebrates.

Reef Compatibility (“With Caution” Status)

While often marketed as reef-safe, the Melanurus Wrasse is best described as reef-safe with caution.

Potential risks include:

  • Opportunistic feeding on small ornamental shrimp
  • Preying on weak or overturned snails
  • Increased hunting behaviour when underfed or under-stimulated

It will generally leave corals alone, but invertebrates are always at some level of risk depending on individual behaviour and feeding regime.

Tank Mates & Behaviour Considerations

Melanurus Wrasses are active and can be assertive in the aquarium.

Key compatibility notes:

  • May outcompete or harass smaller, shy fish
  • Can stress delicate species such as fairy wrasses if introduced incorrectly
  • Best kept with similarly robust tank mates
  • Should be introduced carefully in community reef systems

They are not ideal for very passive or ultra-shy fish communities.

Sand Bed Requirement

One of the most important husbandry requirements:

  • Melanurus Wrasses must have a sand bed
  • They bury themselves in sand at night for sleep and safety
  • Bare-bottom systems are not suitable long-term

A soft, fine sand bed of adequate depth is essential for their wellbeing.

Tank Size & Environment

Recommended minimum:

  • 200 litres or larger

They thrive best in:

  • Well-established reef systems
  • Tanks with rockwork for hunting
  • Areas with open swimming space
  • Stable sand substrate zones

Final Thoughts

The Melanurus Wrasse is a highly effective utility fish that combines pest control with strong visual appeal. When well-fed and properly housed, it is a hardy and valuable addition to many reef aquariums.

However, like many “clean-up” species, its behaviour shifts significantly depending on feeding levels and tank mates—so planning and observation are key to long-term success.
