About the Scopas Tang (Zebrasoma scopas)

The Scopas Tang, also known as the Brown Tang or Twotone Tang, is a hardy and peaceful member of the Zebrasoma genus. Featuring a brown to olive body with fine horizontal striping and distinctive yellow accents on the fins, this tang brings subtle elegance to reef aquariums. Juveniles display more vibrant yellow coloration that transitions to brown as they mature. Their peaceful temperament and excellent algae-grazing behavior make them valuable additions to community reef tanks.

Care Requirements

  • Tank Size: Minimum 300 litres (75 gallons), preferably 450+ litres for adults
  • Diet: Primarily herbivorous - requires marine algae, nori sheets, spirulina, and herbivore pellets. Supplement with occasional meaty foods
  • Water Parameters: Temperature 24-27°C, pH 8.1-8.4, salinity 1.023-1.025
  • Swimming Space: Active swimmer requiring open swimming areas and plenty of rockwork for grazing
  • Experience Level: Beginner to Intermediate - hardy and adaptable

Tank Compatibility

Peaceful and reef-safe, Scopas Tangs are excellent community fish. They coexist well with most peaceful to semi-aggressive species including clownfish, gobies, angelfish, and other tangs (if introduced simultaneously with adequate space). Less aggressive than many tang species, making them good choices for mixed tang communities. May show territorial behavior toward other Scopas Tangs or similar-looking species. Completely reef-safe and won't harm corals or invertebrates. Excellent algae grazers that help control nuisance algae.

Fun Facts

  • Possess a sharp spine ("tang") on each side of the tail used for defense
  • Color can vary based on mood, diet, and lighting - may appear darker or lighter
  • Juveniles are more yellow, gradually transitioning to brown with maturity
  • Can live 10-15 years in captivity with proper care
  • Native to the Indo-Pacific region
  • Often sleep in caves or crevices at night, sometimes lying on their side

Special Care Tips

  • Feeding: Feed 2-3 times daily. Use veggie clips for nori sheets to encourage natural grazing
  • Algae Availability: Ensure adequate algae growth or supplement heavily with prepared algae-based foods
  • Acclimation: Use slow drip acclimation method for 60+ minutes
  • Disease Prevention: Tangs can be susceptible to marine ich - maintain excellent water quality and consider quarantine
  • Tank Maturity: Best added to established tanks with natural algae growth
  • Swimming Room: Provide plenty of open swimming space - tangs are active swimmers
