The Powder Blue Tang is one of the most iconic and visually stunning surgeonfish in the reef hobby, known for its vibrant blue body, yellow dorsal fin, and bold white facial mask. While highly sought after, it is also one of the more sensitive tang species and is best suited to experienced marine aquarists.
This fish is a true showpiece in large reef systems but requires stable water conditions, strong oxygenation, and careful introduction to avoid stress-related illness.
Scientific Name
Acanthurus leucosternon
Common Names
- Powder Blue Tang
- Blue Surgeonfish
- White-Faced Tang
Care Level
Advanced
Temperament
Semi-aggressive (can be highly territorial)
Reef Safe
Yes — completely reef safe
Minimum Tank Size
500L+
Adult Size
Up to ~25cm
Lifespan
8–12+ years with proper care
Natural Habitat
Powder Blue Tangs are found in the Indo-Pacific, particularly around reef slopes and surge zones with strong water movement. They are active grazers, constantly feeding on algae growing on rocks and reef surfaces.
In the wild, they are often seen patrolling large territories and interacting with other tang species.
Diet & Feeding
Powder Blue Tangs are primarily herbivores and require a strong algae-based diet.
Recommended Foods
- Marine algae sheets (nori)
- Spirulina pellets and flakes
- Herbivore pellets
- Marine macroalgae
- Occasional mysis shrimp
- Enriched frozen herbivore blends
Feed 2–3 times daily to maintain immune strength and coloration.
Water Parameters
- Temperature: 24–26°C
- Salinity: 1.024–1.026
- pH: 8.1–8.4
- Nitrate: <10–15ppm
- Ammonia/Nitrite: 0
Stable, high-quality water conditions are critical for this species.
Tank Setup
Powder Blue Tangs require large, mature reef systems with strong flow and excellent oxygenation.
Ideal Setup Includes
- Large swimming space
- Mature live rock for grazing
- Strong, turbulent water movement
- High oxygen levels
- Secure lid (active swimmer and jumper risk)
This species performs best in established aquariums with stable parameters and low stress environments.
Compatibility
Powder Blue Tangs can be aggressive, especially toward other tangs.
Compatible With
- Clownfish
- Wrasses
- Foxface
- Dwarf angelfish (larger systems)
- Anthias
- Gobies and blennies
Use Caution With
- Other Acanthurus tangs (especially similar shapes)
- Small or timid fish in confined systems
- Overcrowded reef tanks
- Poor introduction order (often best added last or carefully staged)
Common Mistakes
Poor Acclimation
Powder Blue Tangs are highly sensitive to stress and require careful drip acclimation and stable conditions.
Adding Too Early or Too Late
Poor introduction order often triggers aggression from established fish.
Inadequate Oxygen/Flow
They thrive in high-flow environments and can decline in stagnant systems.
Ignoring Disease Risk
They are more prone to marine ich (Cryptocaryon) when stressed.
Fun Facts
- Powder Blue Tangs are considered one of the most beautiful but challenging tangs in the hobby
- Their white face mask helps reduce glare and may aid reef navigation
- They are highly intelligent and quickly learn feeding routines
- In the wild, they constantly graze and rarely remain still
