About the Eibli Angelfish (Centropyge eibli)

The Eibli Angelfish is a beautiful and hardy dwarf angelfish featuring elegant grey to tan body coloration with distinctive vertical orange to red wavy stripes and bright orange highlights on the fins and tail. Also known as the Red Stripe Angelfish or Blacktail Angelfish due to the dark tail fin, this Indo-Pacific species is popular among aquarists for its attractive appearance, relatively peaceful temperament, and adaptability to aquarium life. The Eibli is one of the more reef-safe dwarf angelfish options available.

Care Requirements

  • Tank Size: Minimum 200 litres (50 gallons), though 300+ litres preferred for long-term success
  • Diet: Omnivorous - requires varied diet including spirulina, marine algae, mysis shrimp, quality angelfish preparations, and occasional meaty foods
  • Water Parameters: Temperature 24-27°C, pH 8.1-8.4, salinity 1.023-1.025
  • Swimming Space: Moderately active, requires rockwork with caves and grazing surfaces
  • Experience Level: Beginner to Intermediate - hardy and adaptable, good choice for first dwarf angelfish

Tank Compatibility

Generally peaceful and one of the more docile dwarf angelfish species. Can be kept with most peaceful community fish including clownfish, gobies, blennies, and peaceful wrasses. May show territorial behavior toward other dwarf angelfish in smaller tanks - best kept as the only Centropyge species unless tank is large (450+ litres). REEF-SAFE WITH CAUTION - generally considered one of the safer dwarf angels for reef tanks, though individual specimens may occasionally nip at coral polyps, clam mantles, or zoanthids. Most Eibli Angelfish are well-behaved in reef aquariums.

Fun Facts

  • One of the hardiest and most adaptable dwarf angelfish species
  • Native to the Indo-Pacific, particularly Indonesia, Philippines, and the Great Barrier Reef
  • The wavy orange stripes are unique to this species and create a beautiful pattern
  • Often confused with the Flame Angelfish but has a more subdued color palette
  • Generally bolder and less shy than many other Centropyge species
  • Can live 5-10+ years in captivity with proper care
  • Excellent algae grazer that helps control nuisance algae

Special Care Tips

  • Feeding: Feed 2-3 times daily with varied diet including algae-based foods to maintain health and color
  • Acclimation: Use drip acclimation (45-60 minutes) though generally hardy and adaptable
  • Hiding Spots: Provide caves and crevices in live rock for security and natural behavior
  • Reef Monitoring: If keeping in reef tank, monitor initially for any nipping behavior, though most are well-behaved
  • Beginner Friendly: Excellent choice for aquarists new to dwarf angelfish - forgiving and adaptable
  • Established Tank: Best added to aquarium with some natural algae growth for grazing
  • Peaceful Nature: Won't bother most tank mates and adapts well to community settings
