About the Canarytop Wrasse (Halichoeres leucoxanthus)

The Canarytop Wrasse is a beautiful and active fish featuring a distinctive bright yellow head and upper body transitioning to white or pale coloration on the lower body, with blue-green accents. This colorful wrasse brings vibrant color and constant activity to reef aquariums. Their energetic personality and beneficial pest-control abilities make them valuable additions to community tanks, while their relatively peaceful nature allows them to coexist with most other fish species.

Care Requirements

  • Tank Size: Minimum 190 litres (50 gallons) due to active swimming behavior
  • Diet: Carnivorous - requires meaty foods including frozen mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, and chopped seafood. Will hunt small crustaceans and worms
  • Water Parameters: Temperature 24-27°C, pH 8.1-8.4, salinity 1.023-1.025
  • Substrate: Requires sand bed (5-8cm deep) for burrowing at night
  • Experience Level: Beginner to Intermediate - hardy and adaptable

Tank Compatibility

Peaceful and generally reef-safe with caution. Compatible with most peaceful to semi-aggressive fish including clownfish, gobies, blennies, and tangs. May show mild territorial behavior toward other wrasses, especially similar species. Best kept singly unless tank is very large. Will hunt small crustaceans including ornamental shrimp, tiny crabs, and bristleworms (beneficial for pest control). Safe with most corals. Excellent for controlling flatworms and other small pests. Generally peaceful and won't harass other fish.

Fun Facts

  • Distinctive bright yellow "cap" on head gives them their common name
  • Burrow into sand at night for sleeping - may disappear at lights-out
  • Excellent natural pest controllers, especially for flatworms
  • Very active during the day, constantly exploring and hunting
  • Can change color intensity based on mood and lighting
  • May jump when startled - secure lid recommended
  • Can live 5-8 years in captivity

Special Care Tips

  • Sand Bed: Provide 5-8cm of fine sand for burrowing - essential for their wellbeing
  • Secure Lid: Can jump, especially when new - tight-fitting lid recommended
  • Acclimation: May burrow for first 24 hours after introduction - normal behavior
  • Feeding: Feed 2-3 times daily. Eager eaters once established
  • Invertebrate Caution: Will eat ornamental shrimp and very small snails - not suitable for invert-heavy tanks
  • Reef Safety: Generally safe with corals but may occasionally nip at small feather dusters
  • Activity Level: Very active - provide open swimming space and rockwork to explore
  • Color Maintenance: Bright yellow coloration maintained with quality diet
